Josephine Sims Tanner “Jo” of Richmond, VA died peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2024 at Morningside of the West End at the age of 96.

She was born in Halifax County, VA on August 25, 1928 to the late Patrick Henry Sims and Lillian Torian Sims and was married to the late Charles Tanner. Her teaching career covered the counties of Halifax, Dinwiddie and Henrico over the course of 38 years.

She is survived by (1) son, Charles-Pierre Tanner; (2) daughters: Simone Flournoy and Brigitte Carter; (4) grandchildren; (6) great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by (2) sisters: Zenobia S. Poindexter and Margaret S. Carden; and (2) brothers: Edward L. Sims and Jacob T. Sims. 

Funeral service will be Monday, January 6, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Scottsburg, VA. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Public viewing will be one hour prior to the service.
