Rev. Handy Mae Sweeney Gary of Halifax, VA died Saturday, March 2nd at Clarksville Health and Rehab, Clarksville, VA at the age of 87.

 

Rev. Gary was born on October 4, 1936 in Halifax County, VA to the late Paul Sweeney, Sr. and Maggie Hughes Sweeney. She was a former Pastor of St. Paul C.M.E. Church and St. Luke C.M.E. church and was a member of St. Paul C.M.E. Church at the time of her death.

 

Rev. Gary is survived by (1) devoted nephew: Jeffrey Edmonds of Capitol Heights, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by (4) sisters: Annie Conway, Maggie Coleman, Mattie Tucker and Doris Edmonds; and (7) brothers: Moses Sweeney, Paul Sweeney, Jr., James Sweeney, Hezekiah Sweeney, Lewis Sweeney, Charles Sweeney and Leonard Sweeney.

 

Funeral services for Rev.  Handy Mae Sweeney Gary will be Thursday, March 7th at 11 a.m. at St. Paul CME Church, with Rev.  Willis Farrington, eulogist.  Burial will follow in Sweeney Family Cemetery.

 

Public viewing for family and friends will be one hour prior to service.
