Melvin Lee Furges

July 17, 1950 - August 1, 2024

With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Melvin Lee Furges on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the age of 74. A devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, dear brother, beloved uncle, treasured nephew, and loyal friend, Melvin transitioned from the burdens of this world to his eternal rest with Jesus, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, faith, and kindness.


Melvin was born on July 17, 1950, to the late Robert Lee Furges and Bertha Carrington Furges in Person County, North Carolina where he grew up surrounded by family and friends. On March 29, 1969, he married the love of his life, Ann Furges, with whom he shared fifty-five-plus wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and warmth, raising four children who were the pride and joy of his life: Brad, Tara, Taniaell, and Chauncey.


Melvin was a beacon of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love. He taught his children the values of hard work, service, and compassion. His guidance and support were unwavering, and his children always knew they could count on him, no matter the circumstances.


Melvin leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Ann Furges of South Boston, Virginia; two sons: Brad Furges of Dry Ridge, Kentucky, and Chauncey Furges (Claudia) of Elizabeth City, North Carolina; two daughters: Tara Furges Houston (Michael) of Woodbridge, Virginia and Taniaell Williams (Teddy) of Rosedale, Maryland; four grandsons, Courtenay ouston, Cornell Houston, Corbin Houston, and Colby Houston; seven granddaughters: Jordan Peterson, Asia Peterson, Sierra Williams, Kennedy Williams, Gabriella Furges, Aurora Furges & Celeste Furges; two brothers: Allen Carrington and Darryl Furges; three sisters: Jane Potts, Carolyn Brewer & Arnetta Roberts; eleven brothers-in-law; twelve sisters-in-law; and a whole host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
 

A celebration of Melvin’s life will be held on Friday, August 9th at Crawford House Chapel in Halifax, Virginia with a service starting at

2:30 pm.


Funeral services are provided by Jeffress Funeral Home, 2000 North Main Street, South Boston, VA.
